Joy’s husband is famous for his WWII work in the air force squadron as a flying ace with many military decorations. The subject of this portrait was a relative of Don’s squadron friend and was painted like many of Joy’s portraits as a commemorative memorial of someone who has left this world. Joy never actually met this gentleman but the family was more than happy to receive this celebratory likeness as a comfort to his mother. Often the greater significance of the painted portrait has very little to do with the artist.
