This fellow’s grandmother approved of this portrait. Joy reckoned he had a light on inside. And yes that is the apparent mood of the work, perhaps showing with its atmosphere a very happy and lively lad with built in enthusiasm. Maybe that’s why his grandmother approved. That air of the painting is carried forward by its straight forward pose and the saintly light created by the subtle use of very light tones. Its nicely punctuated and given greater compositional force by the darkened corners. Really very clever in composition.
