Yes, they are twins. Can you tell the difference? This portrait set is a little unusual as a quite definite background is included. The dark line of the flower bed crosses both heads in the background taking us to both boys compositionally. It’s a good example of the use of two dimensional qualities of a three dimensional scene. This, of course, is two dimensional, a flat canvas on which a three dimensional illusion will be created. The composition has been arranged in such a way as to to take the strongest compositional line in the three dimensional scene and apply it cleverly to the two dimensional canvas. A lot of thought like this goes into the creation of a portrait. Viewers think of how ‘lovely’ the little boys look, artists and designers see how cleverly they have been placed and depicted. Something you should keep in mind when taking a photograph.
