Joy didn’t know this sitter who posed for a group of painters, but she did a fine job on his portrait. The green-blue tones of the background subtly set of the red orange tones of the face and hair. The buff coloured bow-tie is a good transition to the neutral grey tones on the white jacket and black shirt. The softened brush strokes of the clothing don’t compete with the more detailed strokes of the face so the composition is at peace with itself. It is a bit strange to think here is this lovely portrait of this fellow and he doesn’t know it exists.
