New Art Arrivals This Month

Gallery X News
Hey there members of Gallery X, I'm sure spring is on the way. All that lovely snow shoveling will wander off for another year, and we will all be looking for our neighbours and what they have been doing for the past four months. It's all so exciting, sunshine, blue skies, flowers blooming, and outdoors in shorts.
Spotlight
We are in the process of introducing "Spotlight" on our website. This new inclusion will introduce artists, tell a little about their artistic intentions, their biography, and art pieces they wish to exhibit. I sent out one invitation a couple of days ago and received an enthusiastic response from the artist this morning. If you know an artist who creates or did create a lot of their work in Scarborough, please encourage them to become a "Spotlight" candidate by getting in touch with me at petermarshartist@gmail.com. Three to five images will be featured with the artist’s information, and the work will be displayed for approximately one month.
Building Partnerships in the Community
Building Gallery X is a long journey and will take cooperation between Municipal, Provincial, and Federal politicians to secure solid progress. It is important to realize that volunteers create all our progress. Initial work over the past 8 years has been an important demonstration of our work as a gallery, expression of our values, and promotion of artists. Incorporation was important, our website kept progress going during the pandemic, and at some point, hopefully over the next 6 months, we will reach “Charitable Status”, a necessary stance for raising funds. Last but certainly not least we need more subscribers on our website at galleryxscarborough.com so please tell your friends and neighbours.
Having carried out these crucial points, it is now important to gather the support of all sectors of the community. For example, we have done some work with the educational community, and we would like to expand that. We have done little work with the business community so far but this year we have already started a movement in that direction by joining The Scarborough Business Association. A couple of our Directors went to their dinner this past week and made good contacts. Community organizations, like other non-profits, must be asked for support. Of course, we are always asking for more Board Directors and Gallery X volunteers even though records show there has been a big drop in volunteerism which started during the pandemic. If you feel you could do some volunteer work for Gallery X please get in touch with me.
Meeting with MPP David Smith
President Peter Marsh had a very pleasant meeting with MPP David Smith in December to make a presentation about Gallery X. David Smith was enthusiastic about our meeting, had photographs taken, and published an article in his weekly newsletter. We appreciate this positive promotion of our aspirations for the Scarborough community and beyond. Thank you MPP David Smith.
On that same note, I reported previously that MP Jean Yip came to my house in 2025 to talk about Gallery X and Scarborough art and artists. We also touched on the national and international art scene to try to understand the significance of a renowned gallery, replete with unique international design, becoming possible in Scarborough. After all, we do have a huge population, with diversity of all kinds, including hundreds of artists, amounting to approximately 650,000 people. We must think big about this situation because it is visionary thinking which will create a world class achievement so greatly deserved by artists, and by all Scarborough residents. Such a gallery will be a boon to all businesses, provide our children and youths with expanded potential, draw in provincial, national, and international visitors, and provide a cultural aspect of which we can all be proud.
CBC - Metro Morning
In December a video interview by the CBC’s Kirthana Sasitharan, showed Gallery X on CBC’s “Metro Morning. Kirthana asked many important questions about the significance of our goals, while the works of a goodly number of Scarborough artists were displayed on screen. The video coverage was shared in the report by representatives of Scarborough Arts, our important arts council at Scarborougharts.com, who are also advocating for the needs of Scarborough artists.
MP Michel Coteau
In this same vein we had meetings lined up with MP Michael Coteau and Federal Cabinet Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture, The Honourable Marc Miller, but unfortunately Canada’s winter weather didn’t cooperate and those meetings were cancelled. We are hoping to have them rescheduled in the spring. Although Canada is a young country compared to the age of many, it has a well-educated population excited in its new circumstances to make astounding cultural connections with the world. We have indigenous cultures who have shown remarkable artistic expression over thousands of years, we have remarkable immigrant populations who can easily relate to the rest of the world both culturally and artistically. We have participated artistically in many international exhibitions and it is now time to invite the world to our doorstep in bigger ways than ever. Our country needs it and we can do it!
Charitable Status Application
Gallery X has a debt of gratitude to Cveta Vulcan for all her work on our Charitable Status application. Our Director Tim Petrou reports from his legal office that the application is still sitting in approval stages. We needed it long ago but various serendipitous events got in the way of that progress. We have arrived at the point of approaching philanthropists and starting some fundraising and that is practically impossible without charitable donation receipts being made available to donors. The application was submitted in 2025 and we will hope that it will be approved sooner rather than later.
