The Gallery

The Existential Art Gallery of Scarborough (EAGS) is a purpose-designed, prestige cultural landmark standing proudly in East Toronto that reflects the lived reality of contemporary Canada.  It functions as a professional, national-calibre art gallery, a vibrant creative incubator, and an accessible center for arts education. Designed to international standards, the physical building itself serves as a powerful architectural signal of inclusion, belonging, and national confidence.

  • A National Magnet: The gallery features professional exhibition spaces hosting national and international collections, drawing visitors from across the country and anchoring regional cultural tourism.
  • A Creative Incubator: It provides dedicated studio spaces and production facilities, generating skilled and unskilled employment while giving local talent the visibility they deserve.
  • A Learning Hub: It delivers culturally responsive arts education and youth workforce pathways, establishing a vital civic anchor for lifelong learning.

Why This Space Matters

Despite being a vibrant community of almost 700,000 - for years, Scarborough existed in a cultural “white space” with all prestige cultural infrastructure concentrated in the Toronto downtown core. Not only has this left extraordinary local artists structurally underserved and overlooked, but it also deprived the community of the opportunity to establish a strong sense of place through cultural identity.

By establishing a permanent cultural institution, we corrected this geographic inequity. Through the EAGS, Scarborough community members see themselves represented with dignity in a shared public space that fosters deep trust, social cohesion, and pride while acting as a hub for the thriving local economy.

Where is it?

This landmark does not exist yet except in the imagination of the Gallery X Board of Directors, Volunteers and Sponsors.

The Existential Art Gallery of Scarborough (Gallery X) was established in 2018 as a non-profit organization dedicated to correcting the geographic and social inequity in access to cultural infrastructure, known as the "Scarborough Gap". Led by President Peter Marsh, the organization's founders—a dedicated group of community members united by a shared belief in the power of the arts—embarked on a mission to build Scarborough's first permanent, purpose-built, national-calibre art gallery and creative incubator. For the past six years, Gallery X has successfully operated a digital gallery at www.galleryxscarborough.com, building a strong community foundation and demonstrating the extraordinary depth of local creative talent. The organization’s ultimate aim is to translate this digital success into a physical, prestige cultural landmark.
