This is what Joy said on her facebook page about this painting. “This little girl was painted sometime during my Arts Council years…..I can’t remember her mother’s name but she showed me this photograph of her daughter one day and I thought it was really cute so I painted it for her as a gift. The little girl was at an age when children are often most endearing and they are always among my favourite subjects to paint.” Some of Joys portraits have quite a painterly style about them but I find this piece to be a very delicately rendered piece. If you compare it to many of her other works it has a much more photographic quality with little if any emphasis on brushstrokes, and much greater emphasis on the classical rendering of the forms.
