Yes, in a way this is a portrait of a friend of Joy’s. The daughter gave Joy this anthurium plant, so Joy painted this portrait in memory of her friend who happened to be a great gardener. I have known a number of people who have done plantings in honour of deceased love ones. This piece has a very happy atmosphere with its light-hearted and brilliant colours so I am personally presuming that Joy admired this special friend. Joy had many friends so it is a wonder that we don’t see many of these interpretive pieces in her repertoire of work.
