Nikita Marner came to visit me once at my office at Wexford Collegiate School For The Arts so I knew this fellow personally. A very nice fellow, humble, and a talented artist who passed away from poor health far to young. His paintings had great strength and this is likely why Joy included one in the background for his portrait, a piece now owned by the city at Cedar Ridge Studio Gallery. One can see the pose is well thought out in the composition as the backgrond shapes form a line, making a diagonal cross with the head, in the centre of this classical composition.
