A meeting with MP Michael Coteau
The Existential Art Gallery of Scarborough was pleased to meet with MP Michael Coteau on Wednesday July 29, 2026. President Peter Marsh and his wife Wendy Marsh hosted the meeting at their house and took pleasure in displaying a large collection of art which included the work of a Canadian artist and also a number of works by Scarborough artists.
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss Gallery X’s vision and long-term aspirations. We certainly did that by outlining the aims of our organization, which were to work with consensus, inclusion, and diversity to establish a substantial public Gallery and gathering place in Scarborough; a cultural building of which all Scarborough residents could be proud. We detailed that we had been in action for eight years and felt that the present time offered an important opportunity to advance our vision, particularly in light of the federal government’s focus on building strong communities and infrastructure. We expressed our hope that opportunities to support cultural initiatives of this nature could be explored as government programs and priorities develop.
MP Coteau shared his perspective on some of the practical considerations involved in developing a project of this scale and discussed the importance of broad community collaboration. The conversation touched on the potential role of philanthropists, businesses, social organizations, elected representatives, arts organizations, and other community stakeholders in developing a project of this nature.
The discussion also included the financial and planning considerations associated with projects of this scale. The importance of developing a comprehensive budget, identifying both start-up and ongoing costs, and establishing a clear plan for long-term sustainability was discussed as part of the planning process.
Overall, the meeting provided Gallery X with the opportunity to present its vision, discuss the challenges associated with developing a substantial cultural facility, and hear perspectives on the importance of community collaboration and careful long-term planning. The Gallery appreciated the time MP Coteau devoted to the discussion and the opportunity to share its ongoing work and aspirations. The conversation provided useful perspectives that are being considered as Gallery X continues to refine its plans. As part of its five-year plan, the organization is now exploring the development of a “Collaboration Council” to bring together community, arts, business, philanthropic, and other stakeholders as the project moves forward.
